Another stop in the #jeannedoesasia series. . The people of Hong Kong are absolutely fascinating to me. There’s a rich mix of Asian heritage and the European influence that isn’t replicated elsewhere. Singapore has its own version of Brit-Asia-ish (the land of Britasia?), but nothing quite has the Hong Kong funk. And funk isn’t even the right word. Maybe grunge? . Hong Kong is dirty and grimy (I kind of love the grime and the grunge, being Taiwanese American and all and having an ingrained, deep, stinky-tofu love of Taiwanese grimyness), an island of sardine-packed humanity skittering like ants amongst high end, glittering shopping centers and condos that only the über-riche can afford. The cars that race around are Maseratis, Teslas, Porches, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis (and, occasionally, a BMW or Mercedes- perhaps someone’s kid’s starter car?). I’m pretty sure I’ve seen more super cars in Hong Kong than I have seen in California. . But life is not super fancy for everyone. For a tiny island, Hong Kong is able to squeeze an impressive number of humans in, and many of them live on tiny pallets in the homes of their employers. On Sundays, you see these imported maids (they come from Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh) sitting on flattened cardboard boxes on the walkways around the city, enjoying some camaraderie on their days off. For a low USD700 (approximate— I think this amount varies), you can have a live in maid who cooks, cleans, does laundry, and cares for your children. The most expensive part of the arrangement is finding an apartment with an extra half bedroom for them. . And I am a passerby, observing with ignorant eyes. Had dinner with a good friend and colleague today and came to the realization that, despite all the wonderful women present in my life, both professionally and personally, I really don’t spend enough time with them and appreciating them. This pretty lady is one of my best friends, a partner in crime, and a rockin’ boss lady of her own art business. A former lawyer/litigator, she’s now making beautiful art in San Diego @bypriscillalee. We don’t ever get enough time together, but when we do get to meet and hang it, it’s always a fun run of food, wine, coffee, art, and wonderful conversations about... everything! In the almost decade (!) that we’ve known each other, it’s only been one adventure after another. . Here’s my portrait of Priscilla (to kick off a short series of portraits) from when I visited in San Diego in February earlier this year.
